THE Lions in District 308B1 Malaysia have embarked on an Education Fund called the Lions Education Assistance for the Needy (LEArN) Fund to address the education needs of the poor.
Its district governor and chairman of the Lions Education Foundation which manages the LEArN fund, Datuk Yeow Wah Chin, said this was to kick-start an important social responsibility in providing opportunities in education for the poor in our highly competitive society.
“The LEArN Fund will provide study aids in the form of scholarships or interest-free loans as the case may be.
“Upon graduation and securing a job, the recipients can repay the money according to a mutually agreed repayment scheme,” he said.
The ‘revolving’ nature of the fund is designed to help more underprivileged students seeking tertiary education in Malaysia.
“This will give some hope to poor students with average exam results, regardless of race or religion, who are lacking in financial resources to further their studies,” added Yeow.
Malaysian students who are eligible to apply must be from families whose monthly household income is RM3,000 and below or an average of RM30,000 per annum.
Students who have obtained a minimum of four As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and have an acceptance letter from the public or private education institutions are encouraged to apply.
Those who have STPM certificates who want to continue their education locally can also apply.
Yeow said the vast number of clubs — 170 of them — set up in almost every district in Peninsular Malaysia had a wide network with schools that were able to inform them of poor students for the study aid applications.
The application forms can be obtained from www.lions308b1.org. They can click on the “LEArN Fund” link on the website.
“We want to distribute as much of the money we have, to as many students possible.
“We will offer RM5,000 per year for each student until the student graduates.
“This is the first time we are embarking on such a massive project so we will continue to collect more funds to keep it going. There should be an exception to the general rule in terms of providing the quantum of study aids, but for now this is our plan,” he added.
